My first BLOG entry, woohoo! I actually like the word BLOG.  Of course, being a data programmer, I had to find out what BLOG means (I mean separate from the obvious of original "Web Log" definition).

So I searched (NOTE: I do not "google" anything, it's called searching and I refuse to use that term, or for that matter use Google.  I use Yahoo - besides it just sounds like more fun ... YAHOO)

I like the Boring Lump of Garbage one. Cute.  I digress. 

I work for a company that writes parking lot software. I enjoy what I do--I enjoy doing the detective work and finding ways to force data from old systems into our newest T2 Flex system. I know many people would think I am crazy, it is tedious and it can be exhausting.  But at the same time, it is also challenging and puzzling.

At times, I really have to be a detective.  Trying to figure out what the customer needs and how our parking solution will fit their style is rewarding...and they're all so different! For example, cities usually need more citation management and boot/tow capability. Along with that, they need an appeals system. And of course, they need to take payments and report on people and vehicles. Colleges need to have permit solutions and a way to get the students information, give them a permit, and take that payment. Another common need of higher education parking systems is a way to put permit holders on a payment plan for the accademic year, or to take it out of a student account at the bursar.  Parking garages need to have lots and facility management along with the ability to park the customers (and know how many spaces they might still have left), manage events that would use the garages, and allow secure credit card payments. 

Now I get to Blog about it, this should be a lot of fun!

Maximizing Efficiency with a Unified Parking Solution and Asset Management

Facilitating the Asset Management class at T2's User Group always proves to be a learning experience - even for the instructor. This year I was happy to see the turn out was as good as it was a few years ago when I taught the class.  In those few years, T2's Asset Management module, which is part of of the T2 Flex parking system software, has evolved quite a bit.  It now includes automatic assigned work order responsibilities and scheduling for reoccuring work orders.

We discussed ways to become more unified in how we use T2's advanced parking solution during the session.  Many customers also take advantage of T2's Parking Access and Revenue Control solution, Handheld Ticket Writers, and Event Parking Management solution.  With the Asset Management module, users can now track the hardware and other assets used for those solutions!

Tracking regular maintenance of parking garage equipment, handheld ticket writers, customer self service kiosks, even elevators and vehicles with T2 Flex's Asset Management makes our customers live's easier, and nothing feels better than that.  Asset Management in T2 Flex conveniently maintains the scheduling for an asset to be used with an event or scheduling regular maintenance or a repair as it prompts the user when a schedule conflict occurs.

Many of T2's customers were also excited about taking another approach at being unified in that they could use the T2 Flex Report Scheduler to send automatic notifcations to workers about assets they manage that require maintenance.  Even better is the fact that parking enforcement officers can enter, maintain, and close work orders (including attaching photos!) right on the handheld ticket writer!

Becoming unified means becoming more efficient with your parking system software. 

Shifting Gears

After 7 years of working in a major retailer's IT department, I decided I needed a change of pace. While I built up some great relationships with my coworkers, the work itself was monotonous.  I needed to work on something bigger and more creative.  So when I got a call from one my friends who worked at T2 Systems, I was curious. Two of my friends had left my current company to work there, so I'd heard a lot about the awesome T2 culture. But how would it benefit my career as an Application Developer? How complicated could software that lets you in and out of garages be? I mean, you drive up, press a button, and get a ticket, right? Turns out, there is a whole lot more involved than just that! This week has been eye-opening as I've learned about everything our main product, T2 Flex, does. It is a single unified parking solution covering everything from parking access and revenue control to parking permit management to even handheld ticket writers. It is all highly advanced and fascinating to learn about.

So how will this move benefit my career? T2 has taken pains to stay ahead of the curb--I mean curve--in the industry, and the technology that makes all of those things possible is innovative and interesting. I'm now able to develop and code with experts in the field using software and technology that is industry-leading, be challenged by my work, and have opportunities to be creative!

So now I'm shifting gears and looking forward to the future with T2!

Culture Shock? More Like Culture Rock!

 I made the choice to take a position at T2 for a variety of reasons; one of the biggest was the culture.  After one day at T2 I was impressed by what this organization has done to create such an exciting and refreshing atmosphere.  While many people have moved and changed jobs, moving into this company was like none other.  The transparency T2 provides shows great pride within the organization and it’s reflected in each associate.  In never having worked for a company that so conciously promotes culture, it has been a wild experience getting involved in T2.

I was also impressed by the industry.  At first I didn’t know what to think about access and revenue control, parking garage software and parking ticketing management, but getting more of an understanding of this 25 Billion dollar industry, I see nothing but more potential, growth and opportunity. T2 is an industry leader because of our products, and I am proud to be part of the excitement.  I never thought that working in advanced parking solutions, talking about access revenue control and permit management would be my next career move, but after getting learning more and meeting so many of our great customers at User Group, I see nothing but potential.  When the staff likes the company and the customers like the company, it creates a really special place of incredible promise.

It’s the people that make this company what it is.  It seems like in this economy, business is all about the bottom line.  While financials are important, the leadership here at T2 doesn’t forget about their roots and how vital each person is in the grand scheme of things.  I was excited to get to work today and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for me tomorrow!

Parking is Complicated

I just passed my four-year mark working in parking. After nearly nineteen years in banking, it took me a while to really understand. Don't get me wrong, I'm still a long, long way from being prepared to sit for the CAPP test,  but I think I can honestly say "I get it" when taking about Parking Access and Revenue Control, Parking Garage Software, Handheld Ticket Writers, and a lot of what goes into managing them.

For me, all that complexity translates back to computing systems that talk to all of those advanced parking solutions that are out there in the world dealing with all of the parkers. Even in the summer when many of T2's customers that use our software as a campus parking solution are at a relatively low volume of parkers, we're seeing around 20,000 transactions a day amounting to around a million dollars and that's just for our customers that use our hosted parking system software. A similar number run their own computer systems running T2's parking software.

Each of those transactions generated has a "footprint" on the servers that we use to host. They translate to memory usage, CPU usage, and disk reads/writes. As a geek and a numbers guy, it is absolutely fascinating to watch the metrics as the complex transactions are processed and completed. The main reason we monitor everything that goes on in our Hosting Environment so that we can make sure there's enough hardware to support all of our customers efficiently and well, but I still think all of those metrics are just plain cool.

Theme Park Parking - Room for Improvement?

Okay, so lately I have been spending a rather high percentage of my time at the amusement parks of central Florida. The weather has been beautiful and I just like to get out and about...people watch so to speak. What amazes me though, is the parking operations at the different parks. For example, the Disney parks use manned lots to control parking. You pay your $14 fee to gain entrance to the attendant and follow the cones until you get to the designated parking row where several additional parking attendants guide you into your space for the day - ones even on a Segway (which I think is really cool, but...I digress). The same work flow happens over at Universal Studios with one exception, you get to park in a parking garage instead of having the sun beat down on your car in a lot. Other than that, everything is the same - okay no Segway here but everything else is the same.

So I guess what I am getting at is, aren't they even the least bit worried about having that much cash exchange hands without some kind of control? I mean, yeah most times I go through the gates, the parking attendant rings up the money in the cash register so there is no question. But I am sure there are times when it is busy that the cashier doesn't ring up a transaction, for the sake of saving time.  I think this would be a perfect location to have a parking management system. Maybe something like T2's PermitNOW (shameless plug inserted here!) I mean, in order for the parking permits to be printed, a transaction has to take place. So whether the customer is paying by cash or credit card, the parking attendant runs it through the handheld ticket writer and out comes a parking permit for the day. The beauty of this is, since payment has to be made in order to generate a parking permit, everything is trackable through the parking management software on the back end.

Well, seeing as Disney has been in business for a few decades, I guess they probably have this parking thing down, but I say, there is always room for improvement:)

Selling Parking like an Airline

Selling parking spaces is kind of like airlines selling seats, or hotels selling room-nights.  The supply of parking is pretty much a fixed quantity:  it's not like new parking spaces are made available every day (or planes suddenly fly with more seats, or hotels suddenly have a new wing of rooms to sell).

Because the quantity is fixed you want to maximize the usage of the spaces (or seats or rooms) by filling those spaces every day.  A day that a parking space remains empty generates no revenue - just like an empty seat on a plane that has taken off.

What's interesting about selling out the spaces - but not overselling them - is that it serves two purposes:  (1) it maximizes revenue at the current price, and (2) it maximizes the number of satisfied customers.  Oversell may generate more revenue but it dissatisfies some parkers who can't find space.  Underselling generates less revenue and potentially fewer total satisfied customers.

In the case where your supply of parking spaces or airplane seats or hotel rooms is mostly constant you have to use pricing to try to manage the demand.  Having a number of parking spaces is actually irrelevant, what you want to do is create a scarcity of available spaces.  The key is to find the price at which all the spaces sell, but no more than all of them.  Economically speaking, this matches the supply and the demand in a way that satisfies the most people at the highest price.  Making the price higher will drive away customers, and making the price lower will result in a shortage of spaces.

Airlines realized this a long time ago, and have come up with many ways of trying to fine tune pricing so that the passenger load factor (the ratio of full seats to available seats on a given flight) is as close to 100% as possible.  Pricing for a seat on a particular flight can be revised or altered several times a day by computer systems trying to sell out the plane.

In what ways to airlines use creative pricing?  We're all familiar with these.

Probably the most common pricing differentiator is by using a "class" system - first class, business class and coach class are three differentiators.  The parking equivalent could be the garage near the building versus the economy lot further away.

Additionally, seats within a class might be priced differently.  In coach the airline passenger has the option of paying a premium for an exit-row seat, or for a seat with extra legroom.  The parking equivalent here could be reserved spaces near a door, or perhaps parking in a nested area on a given floor of a facility.

Airlines also set their pricing based on the desirability of the flight.  Morning and evening flights are more popular than afternoons, so these are priced higher.  Wednesday is unpopular for flying so it's cheaper, while Friday and Sunday are the most traveled and subsequently higher priced.  Parking does the same thing:  early bird specials encourage parking before the rush hour; while special events might cause prices to spike on a weekend.

What is a little more unusual about the airline seat-pricing model is that the airline is aggressive at selling out the seats.  The airline computer systems and predictive modeling will change the price of a seat multiple times, even in the same day.  If the flight looks like it will sell-out then the remaining seats (the scarce ones) increase in value.  Now imagine if parking operations did this - varied the price of the stall based on the number of remaining stalls!

There is a parking operation attempting to do this.  The SF park project in San Francisco has received a lot of parking press lately on their goal of adjusting meter prices monthly so as to create a small amount of empty spaces on each block-face.  The idea is that parking should be mostly full most of the time.  The City plans to combine parking management software, space detection equipment, and a variety of metered parking devices to create gather sufficient data to price spaces monthly.  Too much availability?  Drop the price.  Parking too scarce?  Raise the price.  It's the free market at work!

It's a simple concept but requires a complex implementation.  Many eyes in our industry are watching to see how this works.  In terms of the airline's sophisticated daily pricing adjustments, these monthly parking updates are as close as we'll get for a while.  But rest assured that if this experiment is a success then you'll see more and more parking operations pricing like airlines.

Old School Parking Tickets

Working with Advanced Parking Solutions every day can change your perspective. I've been with T2 Systems for almost four years now and the time has just flown by. This week we were having a technical discussion about some possible enhancements to the features in the eBusiness (parker-facing) portion of T2's suite of Parking System Software and it reminded me of my first day at T2.

On my first day at T2, I got the first and only parking ticket of my life. Yeah, that's what I said. I'd never gotten a parking ticket before being hired at T2 and I haven't gotten one since. That's probably a combination of me being a conformist detail-oriented rule-follower, and living in the suburbs where there just isn't a lot of parking enforcement going on. There aren't exactly a lot of parking garages in my neighborhood.

For the record, I totally deserved the parking ticket. I parked in a two-hour zone and got stuck for a lot longer than I expected. I didn't make it back to my car for almost four hours. The parking ticket was a whopping $10. Thinking back on that now, I'm surprised how old-school the ticket was. It wasn't produced using an electronic handheld ticket writer. It was pen on two-part-carbonless paper. No parking ticket computer for them. Pure no-tech.

The really frustrating part was that the city parking solution was entirely manual. Not just the ticket writing. The whole darn thing. I had to pay $10 in cash ONLY and I had to pay it in person within 7 days. Oh, and the parking office was already closed for the day. If only they had given me a way to pay online, I'd have done it right then and there. I'd even have paid a few extra bucks to save the extra trip back to pay the fine.

At the end of the day, it just goes to show that there are a lot more places than need good parking enforcement systems and that following the rules works well for me.

Crazy Parking Predictions of 2011

As the Old Man of 2010 way to the New Year's Baby of 2011 the question is... what does the New Year hold?  Given that some of the most famous prognosticators predict with only 39% accuracy you'll be equally forgiving with these Crazy Parking Predictions of 2011!

> In 2011 parking meters will experience a software glitch similar to Y2K.  Twenty-four hours of free parking will be given to anyone who feeds a meter at 11:11am on November 11, 2011.

> 2011 will be the Year of the Parking App.  If you have an iPhone, an Android-phone, megaphone, Blackberry, Blueberry or Halleberry then you'll be able to get an "app" that lets you find parking, reserve parking, pay for parking, or share parking with somebody you don't know.

> In 2011 the Internet will officially be renamed "The Cloud".  Use of the word Internet will disappear overnight.  Nobody will really be sure what the cloud really is, but there will be Parking in The Cloud.  One enterprising American City will rename itself The Cloud.

> In 2011 sales of electric vehicles will exceed expectations.  With these new vehicles we will see the creation of the electric license plate, which will subsequently befuddle all existing LPR systems.

> 2011 will see rent prices rise in London, England to such a high level that it will become cheaper to live in your car than in an apartment.  Parking garage owners will offer cash-for-clunkers to fill empty stalls, and then lease them out as hotel rooms.

A Geek's View of Parking Management at IPI

In my last blog entry, I said I thought I should stick to what I know (technology) and not dive too deeply into the industry side of parking that many people know so much better. I'll be keeping that in mind again today. So last month I went to the IPI (International Parking Institute) Conference and Expo in Las Vegas. This was my second IPI (after a bit over three years working in the technology side of the parking industry).

After seeing everything there, I have to say that I'm proud to work for T2. I knew we had some pretty cool stuff (end of shameless plug), but it really hit home how much T2 stood out in that room. Don't get me wrong. I'm not slamming anybody. I'm just so accustomed to thinking about technology meaning servers and terabytes of storage and hosting an Advanced Parking Solution. That makes it easy to forget that a lot of the industry has nothing to do with computers and that technology in parking often has nothing to do with computers.

T2 sells Parking Garage Software, Parking Citation Collections, Campus Parking Solutions, Handheld Ticket Writers and a whole lot more cool parking Technology. That's all cool stuff and I love working with it, but how cool is it to sell a giant ice melting machine that you can drive around. I may have lots of cool servers with a bunch of cool blinking lights, but I can't push a button to melt a bunch of snow off of a parking lot. That's got to be a lot more fun than making something go away with the delete key. Most interesting to me was all of the technology in that melting machine. It (and a few other booths) made me realize that lots of parking technology has to do with fuel efficiency and reliability without having even one server. That said, I think the melter had a few blinking lights so it still made me smile.

We all want the closest parking space possible - admit it!

Ok, I don't consider myself a lazy person... I like to walk, bike ride, swim; I always choose the stairs over the elevator (unless we're talking about more than 5 floors of course), and I get peeved whenever I see the same person circling a parking lot or parking garage multiple times just so they can get the closest parking space available.  I just think that's ridiculous...by the time they find something, I'm already in the store getting my stuff done!

However, I must admit that there are definitely times when I sooo want to take advantage of the new "mommy" (or should I say "parent") parking spaces that many stores and other areas now provide - even when I don't have my kids with me!  How horrible is that??  Have you seen these spaces?  They usually are indicated by a drawing on the space that shows a parent with a car seat, stroller or other contraption for transporting your children.  And even though my kids aren't with me, the car seats in the back are clearly visible.  Would anyone really see me walk out of the car without the kids?  Is there an enforcement officer walking the grocery store parking lot with a handheld ticket writer making sure that you really do have your kids with you?  Would they really give me a parking ticket or citation?

Believe me, there have been days when I'm so tired and there are clearly no spaces that are close - so I've been tempted to snag one of the "parent" spaces, even without the kids.  For those of you who may watch "Desperate Housewives", there was an episode in which one of the wives (Gabby) mis-used her husband's handicapped parking hangtag - just so she could be close and not have to walk far in her high heels.  Does my tempatation put me in the same category as her?  I certainly hope not!

Let's face it - there are times when we all want to park our car as close to our destination as possible...there are days when we just don't want to walk it.  As one who works for a parking management solution provider, I understand the importance of parking rules.  That's what keeps me employed!  Businesses, cities/municipalities, colleges and universities all need rules, and ways to manage those rules and all of us that park.  Why else would there by the need for parking system software, parking permit management systems, access and revenue control systems, and a ton of other parking management solutions?

It's because at the end of the day, we're all selfish - willing to fight, drive around, waste valuable time - and break the rules, in order to snag that coveted close parking space!  We all just might as well admit it!

The Undercover Boss for Parking Staff and Parking Customers

There is a new show on CBS called Undercover Boss (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/undercover_boss/) that everyone should watch.  The first episode featured the CEO of the company that my husband works for.  He works for Recycle America Alliance which is part of Waste Management.  President and COO Larry O'Donnell picked a few different jobs and went out with staff level employees undercover as a new employee.  Wow, was he shocked.  He is a leader with great intentions, but didn't really understand all of what goes into making his company a success until he got down, literally, into the dirt.

Of course, I imagined our President and CEO, Mike Simmons fielding Support calls, and installing our parking management software and thought, BAD IDEA!  The man is the President and CEO for a reason!  He knows how to find the right people that can find the right people, that can find the right people (repeating for affect:)) to do the job well.

Our company is not as big as Waste Management, nor are the parking organizations that use our software.  So, we shouldn't be shocked about what happens in our organizations. We should be able to be in tune with the day to day.  Since everyone already knows me in my area, I can't exactly go undercover:).  Instead, I have opted to step in for my staff several times in my management experience to be able to 1. help out during busy times and 2. stay current in what their roles entail.  It is still eye opening to me and I am only one level removed. 

Look at it a different way and think about what it means to be a parker and what they experience through our organizations.  Sure, there are plenty of customers out there that, well, feel they DESERVE to park wherever they want.  But think about the parkers that have the best intentions, try to follow the rules, and can't because of poor signage or badly written rules and regulations.

Yesterday, Linda Kauffman (VP of Industry Solutions) and I were visiting a customer in Baltimore.  We parked in a garage (public garage, not our customer's) near where our meeting was being held and had difficulty parking AND leaving.  The signage was difficult to understand, stairways led to the point of no return, and leaving- we drove through the parking garage for more than 5 minute trying to figure out where the exit was.

My point in this ramble is that we should all be trying to put ourselves in other people's shoes to do the best job we can.  For our staff, the only way to advocate for them properly is to have a better understanding of their day-to-day.  For our customers, the only way to serve them best is to understand their needs. 

It is pretty simple isn't it?

Parking Garage Software & The NFL Playoffs

Last weekend was the beginning of the NFL playoff season.  This weekend we're heading into another exciting round of football action.  One thing about the NFL, it is a copy cat league.  When one team shuts down a high-powered offense with a particular defensive scheme, the rest of the league applies that defense to that high-powered offense.  I wonder if the same thing applies to Garage Parking Solutions across the nation and how they implement their parking garages. 

Over the past few years, I've had the opportunity to visit City & Campus Parking Solutions implemented all across the nation & here's what I've observed:

  • Parking Garages east of the Mississippi River typically have the Cashier in the exit lane
  • Parking Garages in the SouthWest United States typically have the Cashier centrally located in the garage
  • Parking Garages on the West Coast of the United States have the Cashier located as the parker is entering campus 
As a result, it would seem that parkers in the SouthWest have adopted to Automated Pay on Foot machines better than those on the East Coast.

Am I all wet here or are all you parking professionals just a bunch of copy cats?

Welcome to 2010!  Did you make any New Year's resolutions?  Every year many folks set out with the best of intentions to start off the new year.  And sometimes these stick... but mostly they don't.

In fact the same New Year's Resolutions seem to crop up every year with alarming popularity.  You can find lots of them online.  However in order to put a "parking spin" on them, here are my suggestions for the Top Eight New Year's Resolutions for a Parking Office.

Eight New Year's Resolutions for the Parking Office

1. Spend More Time with Family & Friends

You're a parking office.  You don't have any friends.  You do, however, have scofflaws.  Spend more time with them instead - they'll love you for it!
 

2. Get Fit

Regular exercise is the key to being fit.  What does a parking office do to get fit?

Lifting weights will help get fit.  And not too many things weigh more than a car!  So lifting cars is what we need - lifting them right over to the towing compound.  That's the resolution:  towing three reps of 10 cars each and every day.
 
3. Lose Weight

Statistics show that people are overweight.  Even obese.  They need to lose some weight.  But how does a parking office lose weight?

Most parking operations have filing cabinets full of paper records.  I say "who needs 'em?"  Filing cabinets are fat and heavy.  Ditch the filing cabinets, shred the papers, and you'll feel much lighter.  (Side benefit:  paperless office).
 

4. Quit Smoking

If the parking office is smoking then it's probably on fire.  Run!
 

5. Enjoy Life More

The parking office is a go-go-go operation.  Stop and smell the flowers once and a while.

Close the office for a week, stop enforcing, and raise the gates.  You'll feel better afterwards and your parkers will love you for it!  (Or at least during the resuting parking free-for-all they'll get an appreciation for the services that you actually do provide.)
 
6. Quit Drinking

We all know that parking and booze go together like hot dogs and buns.  Skip this resolution because you're just going to break it at the next parking conference.
 

7. Get Out of Debt

Most parking offices have lots of debt.  If you have a garage, you have debt.  Or a municipal bond.  Or parking management software (from the other guys, of course - our stuff is very reasonably priced).  Debt. Debt. Debt.

Bottom line:  You couldn't sell enough permits and collect enough citations in a hundred years to get out your office out of debt.  So suck it up and see resolution #6 as a coping mechanism.
 
8. Learn Something New

Aha!  A resolution we can actually do something about.  But what to learn... hmmm.

Learning another langugage is cool and never goes out of style.  Sometimes an accent even makes you sound more sophisticated.

Latin is always a popular choice.  Many people have even heard of it.  You can re-do all your parking materials and brochures in latin too.  And you can even change your phone system greeting:  "Pulsus 1 pro latin vel 2 pro english secuutus per talentum."
 

Follow these resolutions and you're well on your way to a better 2010.  Happy New Year!


New Stuff in T2 Flex v6.6!

There has been a lot of blood, sweat and tears around here, but we did it! T2 Flex v6.6 was released this week. You might be thinking "Big deal...what does that mean to me?" Well, what's sooooo cool about this release is a hosting feature. This is not just your ordinary parking permits and enforcement software hosting, though.

T2 Systems can now host your parking access and revenue control systems!

So, allow me to break this down for you. Not only can T2 Systems host your parking permit and enforcement management software, but as an industry first, we can now host the software for your gated parking facilities. I can't believe it's September already - Holy Cow!! That means T2 System's Powerhouse User Group conference is only 2 months away. For those of us in the marketing department, this means we are T minus 60 days from our most important event of the year and we are in high gear - that translates into flying 100 miles per hour with our hair on fire.

What is Powerhouse User Group you might ask? Well it is an opportunity for T2 customers to learn more about T2 Flex, their parking management software. It also gives our customers the opportunity to discover cool new features and hardware offerings. This year, as in years past, our customers will be able to demo the latest in handheld ticket writer options as well as experience a truly unified parking management system. We will even have parking access and revenue control hardware so our customers can see how T2 Flex raises and lowers gates for garages and parking lots.

The conference is not only about discovering new T2 solutions, it is also about networking with other parking professionals to explore new ways of managing parking operations.

Parking as a career...are you kidding me?

Do you know anyone who "chose" parking as their career? The overwhelming answer is no! Have you ever wondered what people did before entering the parking world? We here at T2 Systems set out to discover what people did before coming to the parking world. We have found some interesting, and sometimes disturbing, stories. Here at T2 Systems, we have (among others):
 

  • Former - and current - computer nerds
  • teachers/convenience store workers
  • law enforcement officers that thought parking was sooooo not cool
  • cable salespeople who sold in nudist colonies


We received such great feedback from our folks internally, that we decided to "take this on the road" so to speak. We started running a promotion for our upcoming User Group conference targeting our customers and asking what they did before parking. Guess what? Not too many people decided when they were little kiddos to pursue a high profile career in the parking world.

That being said, there is something about parking that sucks you in. Whether it is the parking garages, the handheld ticketwriters, the parking citations or (and this is my personal favorite) the parking management software, for some reason, once you get into parking you don't leave all that quickly. 

I have been in parking for about 2 years now. What can I say about parking? Well it is unlike any industry I have ever worked in. The vast majority of the people in this field are very open to sharing ideas and genuinely interested in helping others succeed.  I will say tho, when I tell people I work for a parking software company, I do tend to get "the look".

Cash only for Parking? No Credit Cards? Really?

Having worked for a banking technology company for nearly 19 years, I'm relatively new to the parking industry. Since Joining T2 Systems in 2007, my eyes have opened to the complexity and scale of modern parking. That said, one thing still baffles me. Why are there still so many facilities that don't accept credit cards? Don't get me wrong. I understand how hard it is to take credit cards when you're standing in a grass field that usually isn't used for parking. There are Parking Management Solutions for that (and T2 has one), but I'm not talking about grass fields. I'm talking about taking credit cards at parking facilities. Permanent lots or structures that already have gate arms and cashier booths.

A few years ago I got trapped (OK, so I wasn't trapped -- my car was) in an unattended garage because the paper currency acceptor was broken and I didn't have enough quarters in my pocket for an evening at an 80's video game arcade. I walked nearly a mile to get change. Not cool. More recently, I was parked in a downtown garage and found that I needed $20 in cash to exit. When parking is a buck or two for the day, I understand cash only, but $20 is a lot more then I spend on lunch and I always charge that.

Credit cards aren't the future. They're the present. Accepting credit cards doesn't have to be a pain. They can often be deployed as an extension to the Parking Permit Software and Garage Parking Solutions that you already have in place. T2 Flex has modules that handle credit cards as part of a total Parking Access and Revenue Control system. Accepting credit cards can lower costs for a facility, reduce involuntary profit sharing, and can make it parkers happier (or at least less frustrated).

As a part of the T2 Systems team, it isn't hard to guess that I have a bias for our solutions, but in writing this I'm also speaking as somebody that parks in these facilities. Nobody likes paying for parking (me included), but the less painful it is to pay, the better an experience parkers will have, and the more likely they are to come back to the same facility. I can assure you that's I know exactly which garage I got stuck in.
